With just 42 wolves left in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area (BRWRA) at the end of 2009, the Mexican wolf or “lobo” is facing a fight for its life. Please provide the lobo with a lifeline by proposing this subspecies (Canis lupus baileyi) for endangered listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The lobo is the rarest and most distinct type of wolf in the U.S. and deserves maximum safeguards under the ESA.

http://yubanet.com/usa/Animal-Welfare-and-Environmental-Groups-Urge-Arizonans-to-Vote-No-on-Prop-109.php

PHOENIX, Sept. 3, 2010 – A coalition of animal welfare and environmental groups announced a campaign urging Arizonans to vote against an initiative which is designed to give sole authority over wildlife policy to the state legislature. The Humane Society of the United States, the Animal Defense League of Arizona, and the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter today filed an official state ballot committee — Arizonans Against the Power Grab — urging Arizona citizens to vote “no” on Prop 109.

The proposed ballot amendment is intended to prohibit Arizona voters and the state wildlife agency from having direct oversight on any future policies and initiatives related to wildlife management. If passed, this measure would put wildlife management under the control of politicians in the state legislature rather than experts with the training and experience needed to best manage wildlife, and would deny citizens the same opportunities on wildlife issues that they have on all other subject matter.

“Prop 109 takes away Arizona voters’ rights and is a giveaway to special interests that defend extreme and inhumane practices,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “If we let the politicians take away our right to vote on wildlife issues, what other issues will be next?”

Prop 109 is one of seven constitutional amendments referred to the ballot by the legislature this session. Its purpose is to prevent voters from weighing in on future ballot measures related to wildlife issues, and could even nullify previous measures such as the 1994 ban on cruel and indiscriminate steel-jawed leghold traps.

“Prop 109 is a blatant power grab, aimed at excluding Arizonans from having a voice in wildlife management,” said Stephanie Nichols-Young, president of Animal Defense League of Arizona. “We formed this committee to stand-up for direct democracy and wildlife in Arizona.”

“Prop 109 will undermine the current system of wildlife management in Arizona and give science a backseat to politics, which is the last thing Arizona’s wildlife needs,” said Sandy Bahr, Chapter Director, Sierra Club – Grand Canyon Chapter. “Our system of wildlife management has served Arizona well since 1929, when hunters and anglers helped form the Game and Fish Commission. This measure puts the power in the hands of politicians.”

With fewer than 40 Mexican wolves, excluding pups, still in the wild, it’s time for the Fish and Wildlife Service to re-release M1051, this week’s re-release candidate. A brother of M1049 and M1050, M1051 was a tiny pup when removed from the Saddle pack den in 2007. He had no part in killing livestock and is eligible for release in New Mexico. FREE M1051!

You can help free M1051 from captivity by sending a very brief e-mail to FWS Region 2 Director Benjamin Tuggle. Simply copy and paste the message below into an email, and add a simple sentence or two of your own. Please add your name and address at the end, because anonymous letters get little attention. Remember, too, that polite requests are more effective.

Dear Dr. Tuggle,
I am alarmed at how few Mexican gray wolves remain in the wild and I know that there are wild-born wolves in captivity that are eligible for New Mexico releases. Please re-release former Saddle pup M1051 if he proves to be a suitable candidate for release. He has been in captivity long enough; it’s time for him to be a free, wild wolf again.

Thank you,

Send your e-mail to Director Benjamin Tuggle at RDTuggle@fws.gov.

Montana proposes to poison wolf puppies in their dens and shooting wolves from aircraft! Instead of non-lethal methods to co-exist with wolves, this is how Montana reacts. Most livestock losses are preventable if owners would follow certain guidelines. Instead, it’s the same mindless tactic…pick up a gun and shoot… something!  Please spread the word, share and educate others, and don’t forget to write or call Montana’s Governor:

What Montana FWP is up to and why you should be very concerned:

1. They’ve formed a coalition with the anti-wolf crowd. On August 20th, at the Helena Red Lion Colonial Inn, Montana FWP met with ten hunting and ranching groups with the purpose of forming a coalition to explore ways to strip gray wolves of their ESA protections.   the state is saying that a conservation hunting season for wolves would enhance the survival of the species, according to Dave Risley, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks fish and wildlife division administrator. (So they want to kill wolves to save wolves. Hmmm where have I heard that before?”

Please follow the link and read the rest of this article.  Their tactics of trying to circumvent the Endangered Species Act so more hunting of wolves can continue is absurd.  Also, please tell the state senators and legislation what you think of this!

Thank you to “Howling For Justice” for providing this information.

Wolves and other animals are killed in barbaric ways.  Tactics used are “Denning” (poisoning wolf pups in their dens), aerial gunning (chasing and harassing wolves from airplanes until they become exhausted, then shot), cyanide gas shot in their mouths, sport hunting with golden eagles, and spring loaded traps that break bones.  In addition, wolves have historically been beaten, limbs pulled apart by horses, set on fire, mouths sewn together so they couldn’t eat, jaw removed, and ripped apart by hunting dogs.  Please read the link and spread the word, educate youth, write your representatives, and contribute what you can for agencies that fight in court to stop this madness.

Idaho’s Fish and Game Department wishes to further reduce the number of wolves to allegedly increase numbers of big game animals for their hunters.  Negative impacts on elk are primarily caused by hunters, disease, and weather….not wolves.  People are once again using the wolf as a scapegoat.  Their real agenda is to have as many big game animals to hunt for fun, including wolves.

This week, after seven months of dodging bullets, Idaho’s wolves got a reprieve: the statewide hunt that left 188 of them dead is over.

The actual number of wolves killed since hunting was legalized last year is more than 500—including those shot during the Montana season and others killed by governmental agents protecting livestock.

Wolves became fair game in Idaho and Montana last year after losing the protection of the Endangered Species Act—a move initiated by the Bush administration and ultimately endorsed by the Obama administration. Almost immediately after Sec. of Interior Ken Salazar agreed to the delisting, the states of Idaho and Montana announced fall hunting seasons.

Last fall, a federal judge agreed with Earthjustice lawyers that the hunts likely are illegal, but he nonetheless allowed the hunts to proceed. The first wolf kill in Idaho occurred Sept. 1, when the season opened. Montana hunters started banging away at their wolf population on Sept. 15, nearing that state’s harvest limit of 75 so fast that the season abruptly ended in November.

Earthjustice, representing 13 conservation groups, is continuing its court challenge to the delisting in U.S. District Court in Montana. The suit seeks to restore ESA protections to the wolf until wolf numbers are stronger, migration corridors are protected, and the states develop adequate laws and regulations to protect wolf populations from extinction.

Doug Honnold, the Earthjustice attorney leading the legal challenge, warned that “unless ESA protection is reinstated to wolves, both Idaho and Montana will increase wolf hunting in 2010, setting back recovery even more.”
